The tool this page covers is LinesTool, a code line counter. Put simply, it counts total, code, comment and blank lines across more than forty languages, per file and per language, with CSV export, and the way it does so is this: it detects the language from the file extension and then classifies each line as code, comment or blank using that language's comment syntax, which is why a Python docstring and a C block comment are counted correctly. Everything stated here applies to that tool and the values it handles, and to nothing else.

In day-to-day use the tool works only from the files or folders you drop in, and it is usually opened for things like estimating the size of a codebase. None of that reaches us, so none of it can be stored.

The nature of this site

linestool.com is an informational site. What LinesTool produces are estimates of a calculation, not measured facts and not professional guidance.

Developer tool output

What a developer tool emits is a draft, not a finished artefact. Review anything LinesTool generates — a type, a reformatted document, a converted value — against your own requirements before it goes anywhere near production.

No warranty

For LinesTool specifically, the operative assumption is that your input fits the case the tool is built for. It detects the language from the file extension and then classifies each line as code, comment or blank using that language's comment syntax, which is why a Python docstring and a C block comment are counted correctly. Outside that — and wherever rounding, unit handling or browser behavior intrudes — the Site offers no warranty of any kind; we take care over the method, but the result is what it is.
