About Us
LinesTool does exactly one job: counts total, code, comment and blank lines across more than forty languages, per file and per language, with CSV export. That is the whole of the site. No account, no newsletter, and no wall between you and the number you came for.
Why this site exists
Plenty of developer pages already exist. Most of them make you dismiss a banner, ignore a modal and scroll past filler before the tool appears. LinesTool inverts that: the tool is the page, it counts total, code, comment and blank lines across more than forty languages, per file and per language, with CSV export, and everything else is explanation you can read or skip.
How the calculation works
The calculation happens in your browser, not on a server. Specifically, it detects the language from the file extension and then classifies each line as code, comment or blank using that language's comment syntax, which is why a Python docstring and a C block comment are counted correctly. The method is documented rather than concealed, so you can reproduce a result by hand and see exactly where any difference comes from.
Privacy by default
This is a local tool by construction. The files or folders you drop in never leaves your device; there is no endpoint to receive it and no log to read it back from. Disconnecting from the internet after the page loads changes nothing about how it behaves.
Who this is for
- developers wiring up an API or a config.
- engineers checking a value before it ships.
- anyone who wants a tool that runs locally.
Who pays for this
LinesTool is free to use and supported by advertising. Adverts are kept off the working part of the page, and no advertiser receives anything you type. If a page ever becomes slow or intrusive, that is a bug worth reporting.
Reaching us
If something is wrong, or if there is a feature you would find useful, the contact page is the way to reach us. Messages from people who use the code line counter shape what gets built next.
